Pre schools and Nurseries

A range of creative workshops are available. Please ask – you might be entitled to a grant. Here are details of one such project.

A grant of £200 per setting is available to all pre schools and nurseries in Somerset administered through Diversity Voice based at Victoria Park Community Centre, Bridgwater. The project is supported by Somerset County Council and the Pre School Learning Alliance and funded through the Early Years schools' budget.

The project promotes the values of race equality and cultural diversity and involves parents and carers to promote social cohesion within a setting and local community. It reflects the British value of respect for other cultures. Please ask how to request the grant.

The work involves story telling workshops that give children culturally diverse experiences - “stories from around the world” in which parents will be involved in the spirit of community cohesion, perhaps attending one session. The workshops deliver several aspects of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework.

Equal opportunities

Every child is included, valued and seen as unique. Girls and boys share active roles.

Communication and language

Rich language opportunities are offered within highly inter-active story based activities. Children listen and respond appropriately as individuals and as a group and are asked to solve problems and answer how and why questions; What can we do now? Where do we go from here? How can we solve this problem? The inter-active nature of the work means that the direction of the stories is handed to the children at key moments.

Physical development

Children are engaged in co-ordinated and controlled movements when enacting a story or singing and playing percussion instruments. They play and explore, motivated by a have-a-go spirit.

Understanding the world

The stories and percussion instruments come from India, Africa and Eastern Europe. Within the stories several countries are visited and references are made to geography, food and music.

Personal, social and emotional development

Children feel empowered and express a positive sense of themselves and others. They are encouraged to respect other cultures, explore appropriate behaviour and understand others' feelings. Their individuality is celebrated.

Expressive Arts

Children are introduced to a number of dance and drama conventions.

The work has evolved since its start in April 2016 and is adapted for all pre school and nursery children. School readiness is seen as a key value for four year olds. Thirty four settings received the grant in 2016/17 with excellent feedback.
For example; “Our staff were so enthused by Pete's sessions. It was a perfect training session”.
Pete's fee is £175 for a day – usually four 45 minute sessions.

Please ask Pete about other aspects of his pre school work. He has several story, poetry and musical programmes. Also ask about his mark-making art workshops. He runs training for nursery practitioners and writes feature articles for education magazines. He is an early years teacher with a great deal of experience.

Training

Pete runs highly successful and enjoyable training workshops for nursery practitioners who learn how to use inter-active story telling strategies supported by action rhymes, percussion, drama games, songs and dance.
